We are pleased to announce that we signed agreements for two new Fair-grounds Foundation projects during a visit to Sri Lanka last week. The most eye-catching project is the construction of a completely new community house, a so-called community center. This will be built on a central spot on the Estate overlooking the tea factory. A place where locals can come together and take part in activities. These range from sports, games and learning paths, weddings, celebrating national holidays and various gatherings such as honoring jubilees, but even mourning ceremonies. A 'house' that the entire community can use and bring the population closer together. The social aspect on the Estates is essential.
In addition, we will fully renovate an existing nursery. There is a need to upgrade an existing residence and provide a better accommodation for 20 - 25 children aged 0 - 5 years. New floors, tiling, electricity connections, sanitary facilities, new ceilings, play areas, kitchen facilities and sidewalks will be created for better accessibility. This gives it the status of a completely new day nursery.
All projects will be carried out on the Abbotsleigh Estate by local contractors and residents of the Estate. Abbotsleigh is located at an altitude of 1,300 meters in the Ambagamuwa division of the Nuwara Eliya district about 125 km from Colombo. The first production of tea on this Estate goes back to 1892. Currently, this Estate is managed by Watawala Plantations PLC. The total size of the Estate is 427.46 hectares and 603 families live there. The total population of the estate is 2759 persons and consists of 849 men, 1145 women and 765 children. Abbotsleigh Estate is a Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance certified Estate.
The financing of the projects comes from sponsorship contributions for the Fair-grounds running team for the R'dam marathon, donations during the 10-year jubilee of Axxent Masters in Tea and of course the sales of Sunleaf tea where of every kilogram of tea sold € 0, 50 is reserved for the Foundation.
A great initiative is that for the Community Center a donation of € 9,000 will be provided by the Peeze Foundation. This Foundation was founded in 2010 by Koffiebranderij Peeze from Arnhem with the aim to share prosperity as well as knowledge with disadvantaged people who can use it well. Axxent Masters in Tea has partnership with Koffiebranderij Peeze for the production of their tea: Communitea. A more appropriate cooperation from both Foundations to finance a 'Communitea Center' is hardly conceivable and fits perfectly in their both objectives.
Watawala Plantations itself contributes 30% of the costs that total €uro 35.225, -.
We will keep you informed of the progress via the well-known social media channels, our website and newsletters.
With kind regards,
President Fair-grounds Foundation
